Michael Mayrhofer presented research results of Area 2, Cognitive Robotics and Shopfloors, at the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT). The conference sports topics like control and automation of production systems, communication between those, as well as industry 4.0 and digital twins.
The full paper contributed a lightweight protocol based on OPC UA. The protocol allows production machinery and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) in a distributed production setting to switch communication partners at full runtime.
An example is an autonomous guided vehicle (AGV) which transports goods between production machinery of different vendors, working together in one shopfloor. To ensure safe and correct handover of goods, the AGV has to interact with the control systems of the different machines, requiring to “speak” many different handover protocols. Our approach aims not to standardize the different protocols, but allows to map the different protocols to the same control variables used in the AGV’s control.
